How to fill in the “About Me” section on a dating site
Filling out a profile for an online dating site can be rather like applying for a job—and just as stressful! The appearance questions are easy enough, but what on earth are you supposed to write in the ‘about me’ section on an internet dating site?
Help! I have no idea what to write in the ‘about me’ section!
Do not despair—you are not alone. No matter how fulsome your life probably is, it is inevitable that your mind goes utterly blank the moment you are expected to write a concise and witty description of yourself to entice potential dates, which is why a lot of people resort to a few lame sentences guaranteed to drive the vast majority of online dating users into a coma.
So what on earth am I supposed to write?
Although the section is called “about me”, you have to cut a fine line between useful and relevant information, and avoid writing a ten page biopic that would even send an insomniac to sleep. However, fortunately for those who do not know when to edit their prose, many online dating sites place a limit on how much text you can include in this section…
Before you begin, it is a good idea to write down a few keywords about yourself. Think of this as a shopping list that a potential date can read in order to decide if the ingredients you are offering fit their recipe.
As an example, you might write:
- I like reading crime thrillers
- I enjoy running
- I love curries
- I want to visit Nepal
- I think Ricky Gervais is hilarious
Ok, so while I have just made that list up, you can see that my fictitious person is marginally more interesting that the person who says they are looking for true love and they enjoy watching a DVD on a Friday night.
The key to the ‘about me’ section on an online dating site is to write something that will elevate your profile above the rest. By making yourself sound slightly different to all the other single people, potential dates are more likely to give your profile a second glance. Even if they don’t fall for your picture, your personality might shine through sufficiently to get you to second base and a conversation, which, after all, is the whole point of a profile!
Apart from quirky lists, what else should I write ‘about me’?
Mentioning what you are looking for is sometimes a good idea, particularly if the internet dating site you are using has a broad cross-section of people searching for different types of relationship. So if you have a thing for heavy metal rock gods or intellectual book worms, say so. This is your opportunity to give people an idea about who you are and what type of person you are hoping to meet.
And last, but definitely not least—a sense of humour goes a long way. Never take yourself too seriously on a dating site. It is meant to be fun after all!on at and is filed under Internet Dating.
